Peter Yes, I know.
But I mean the TV programme that has been showing on U.K.'s C.4.
Have just been watching the third programme.
I thought the first one on Motte & baileys was half decent. Covering the topic in a fair manner in just an hour (much less with all the adverts).
The second, which mainly dealt with the siege of Rochester. Was a bit naff. About 10-blokes in armour, grinning from the castles walls, pretending to be a force of about 150. Also sure it was the same lot pretending to be the besieging force. A real come down after Prg 1:
The third, on the castles of Edward 1, was a little better. Mainly showing Conway, Caernarvon, Harlech, with a touch of Beaumaris thrown in. Also a little Rhuddlan. Not even a picture of Flint. Why on earth they had an American Army Reservist commenting on the siege of Conway, by the Welsh ... I just can't understand. Perhaps it was his natty hat & cloak ?
Not as many men dressed up this week. All of them out of focus anyway. Or maybe that was just the Welsh weather !
deborahknowles At least a programme about castles was on the tv. There's so little decent stuff on these days.
Levan Welsh Castles:
I enjoyed the element of the Welsh Castles programme where the connection between Edward's architect (James of St George) and his other castles in Europe.
I was also impressed by the way the programme pointed out some of Edward's tactical and psychological thinking in the siting and design of the castles (e.g. Conwy on a historic royal burial ground, Caernarfon's stripes alluding to Constantinople etc.).
The Civil War:
Pontefract castle being taken by a bunch of Paulden's royalist furniture removers (Trojan Horse tactic) - a great story - despite my political tendencies I just loved the audacity!
